Les Clapiers, near Robion – Saignon - over 30km
Always be suspicious when the day starts well. Our progress is good, Nellie is learning to push her way down narrow paths without worrying about the branches scraping on her packs, the route is pleasant and varied, we meet a number of people who stop to ask us where we are going, we receive a call from Anne-Marie and my feet seem to be holding out, until we start walking into Apt. After four long trips, with many days like this one, I defy geographers and anyone else who knows about this stuff, to explain the strange stretching phenomenon of distances at times like this. What should have been a total of 29km, grew to something closer to 40 and felt like 90. My blister is back, but worse still my arthritic hips feel like the worst toothache, but in the wrong place. When we reach the campsite after 7.00 in the evening, I am close to tears with the pain and even Nellie seems to be feeling the strain. We find her a place to graze, fling up the tent and I go to bed, freezing, exhausted, without eating or showering, but unable to sleep. Paul, amazingly, seems to be in fine form, making me feel like a feminine wimp.
