Too hard and too long, but a day that also included some perfect walking on ancient and perhaps more recently constructed mule paths. Nellie, and perhaps even we, excelled ourselves in terms of agility and energy, but by the time we got to Pont della Manta leading into the town of Corrons, we were all too tired and had simply walked too far. Horses should not cross bridges where the car takes precedence, but at 18.00 with nowhere to stay but the camping site in Gattiers,4km on, we had no choice. Actually 4km was an underestimate – we arrived at the site at 22.00 after 12 hours of walking – all of us exhausted and possibly Nellie the most. We threw down the tent, attached her to a tree in a circle of lush grass and slept, my last thoughts being: Never again. And, why do we do this?
