I have a blister the size of an egg on my heel, but Paul seems to be unaffected – not fair! Another memorable storm, but this time we are inside, sleeping in a proper bed, though Nellie has opted to weather it once again, rather than risk going through a large doorway into a stable – we have so much to learn about her.
In the morning, she is wet, but as keen to go. Our hosts are impressed and tell us that she is 'belle', we know and we should, because everyone we meet, professional horse people included (the vet must have said so at least 3 times within 15 minutes) tells us so. More amazingly still, Nellie negotiates the busy main road without flinching and then crosses a motorway bridge, with a railway line and train running alongside it, so that we can get into Cavaillon. On the other side I turn round to ask Paul to help me tighten her girth but he is crying. No wonder, she has just performed a miracle.
From here an easy cruise through the town, a brief stop to buy an easter egg, much appreciated by Flea, and then slow progress (Nellie has discovered her mooch mode and refuses to be hurried) to our night here in a campsite where the grass is long and we have a mobile home instead of the tent. Life is good – I can tell campsite owners that Nellie is well behaved and can be tethered, without crossing my fingers behind my back, our host, who ordered pizza for us last night, has just brought pain au chocolat for breakfast, the sun is out, my blister has burst and we are travelling through Luberon Naturel Parc Regional. We are in the Provence of Peter Mayle – Provence at its most Provence and most expensive. We appreciate the countryside, but the pretentious towns and their inhabitants less so. Every other shop is an Immobilier.
